Most investigations are charged by an hourly fee plus mileage, along with associated expenses such as tolls, copies, database searches, and lodging/meals if overnight travel is required.
Local process service costs vary according to distance traveled, degree of difficulty to achieve proper service, amount of information you already have about recipient, etc. Process service which is needed ASAP can usually be accommodated, although at a higher rate.
Out of town process service is charged by the hour and mile. It may be less expensive if it is a simple delivery, or more expensive if you cannot provide a correct, current physical address.
